Giant Cement Holding
In Pursuit of More Efficient Processes
Giant Cement Holding is a subsidiary of Spain-based Cementos Portland Valderrivas. The company produces masonry and Portland cement and aggregates for commercial, residential, and infrastructure projects. It owns limestone quarries and cement-manufacturing plants that are located in Pennsylvania and South Carolina. The company also utilizes waste material like aluminum cans as fuel for its cement and aggregate production. (It does this through its subsidiaries, namely Keystone Cement, Giant Resource Recovery, M&M Chemical, and Omni.)
It is currently situated in Summerville, South Carolina and is one of the biggest users of waste-derived fuels in the United States. It is also the fourth biggest cement producers on the East Coast.
Despite the demanding standards imposed on the cement industry regarding ecology-related policies, Giant Cement Holding has endeavored to fully support pro-green pursuits.
The company has completed a $135,000 modernization project at its facility situated in Harleyville, South Carolina.
The project was so immense it took two years for it to be completed. The new plant, which features bleeding-edge technology, commenced operations in June 13, 2005.
Due to extensive planning and more than 900,000 construction man-hours, the plant rightfully touts itself to be one of the most technologically advanced cement producer in the United States.
It is through this project's completion that one can see the company's commitment to the green movement. The plant has been designed to reduced emissions that pollute the air while increasing cement and clinker production by 25%. Also, they have replaced 4 wet-process kilns with a dry preheater-precalciner kiln, which has a 3,500-ton daily capacity.
Dry process kilns are more thermally efficient than their wet counterparts. They also require less water than wet process ones.
These moves by Giant Cement Holding are laudable and serve as a testament to the company's awareness of the increasing concerns regarding air pollution and global warming.
