Awards Given in Recognition of Environmental Cement Plants
In an effort to promote consciousness about issues affecting the global environment, Cement Industry Environment and Energy Awards are given out annually to companies or plants that embrace practices dedicated to sustainable environmental improvement, energy efficiency, land stewardship and sustainability.
During the 4th annual awarding ceremony held in April 2005, 5 exemplary cement plants were recognized. The awards were divided into 6 environmentally-related categories.
St. Lawrence Cement was recognized for investing in equipment that helped significantly reduce noise pollution. Lafarge North America garnered the Outreach award as a result of the programs they created for wildlife habitat conservation, among other things. California Portland Cement was recognized for their successful implementation of a corporate energy management program. Cemex, Inc. Ohio participated in land rehabilitation projects while their Tennessee counterpart won the Innovation award for their nitrogen oxide reducing water injection system and sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide emission monitoring system which significantly improved air quality.
The cement industry is one of the earliest proponents of issues pertaining to climate change. Giving proper recognition to cement companies that uphold this cause will rightfully encourage more facilities to employ green practices and principles into their daily operations and programs.
