Ash Grove Cement
Ensuring Sustainability and Air Quality
A major player in the cement manufacturing field, Ash Grove Cement Company is situated in Overland Park, Kansas. It operates cement facilities in nine states across the United States of America and is a pioneer of the cement and lime industries, given that it has been in operation for 125 years.
It became a corporation in Missouri way back in 1882 and operated under the name Ash Grove White Lime Association.
As with other cement producers that have flocked to the pro-environment banner, Ash Grove Cement Company is also conscious of its footprint on the world's ecology as cement manufacturers tend to leave quite huge ones in terms of air pollution and thermal output. In this light, the company committed itself to sustainable development last 2004 when it became the first and only United States-based cement manufacturer to sign up with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development's Cement Sustainability Initiative.
The company has allied itself with the Cement Sustainability Initiative in order to focus more fully on three fields, namely: social responsibility, economic prosperity, and environmental stewardship.
The company has been pursuing social responsibility goals through providing its manpower with improved safety practices and general job satisfaction. On the environmental stewardship end, the company has taken measure in ensuring the minimization of emissions and environmental impacts.
The company is proactive in considering climate protection issues and land use practices in its operations.
Last July 17, 2008, the company and the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality signed an agreement sealing the company's intent to install equipment that are designed to minimize mercury emissions at its Durkee plant.
Under this agreement, the company is going to cut its mercury emissions by up to 85% in a two-year time span.
